Hate selling & being ‘salesy’? This is for you…
I work with dozens of brilliant female founders in any given month and one of the enduring themes is hesitation when it comes to selling.
Whether I’m asking them about re-connecting with warm leads or suggesting leveraging a media win into sales with a celebratory purchase incentive for their mailing list subscribers… the reluctance is real. So many of us are holding ourselves back from selling and a reframe is needed.
I like to think of selling as ‘giving an opportunity to purchase’. If you know your work is powerful or your product/offer is brilliant, then surely you’re doing your audience a disservice by not offering them the opportunities to purchase from you!?
When it comes to sales emails; the process to me is about informing any potential clients of all the information and insights that will help them decide if any offer will be a fit for them or not. It’s fair to lay out all the info for people to feel equipped to make the best decision for them.
So, are you giving your ideal clients or dream customers enough information? Are you giving them the opportunities to purchase with you?
You probably feel like you’re ‘always’ selling; but, on Instagram at least, only 3.5% of your audience are seeing your content, so you’re probably not hitting enough people with enough invitations to purchase from you or join your programme to be hitting your dream sales targets.
So many of the women I work with are thoughtful, self-aware and deeply attuned to how they come across and might potentially be perceived and can be so fearful of being seen to be selling.
God forbid they're running a business!? They don’t want to push, they don’t want to have to convince (if they do try and convince it feels iiiiicky), and they don’t want to feel like they’re in ‘sales mode’ all the time.
It’s easy to then assume that the waiting, the holding back and the hesitation is a confidence issue.
But I genuinely don’t think it is; or perhaps more accurately, I don’t think it has to be.
You’re selling in a crowded space, where you aren’t able to objectively warm your ideal clients to your offer, you’re just trying to shout the loudest and keep your head above the proverbial waters of the Instagram noise.
